I have noticed when talking to AT&T customers about upgrading their phones, that they think their only option is the iPhone even if they don't really want it. This probably stems from the iPhone being an AT&T exclusive for so long that it is viewed as the only phone on AT&T worth upgrading to. The other phones just get forgotten. AT&T is known for the iPhone and it will likely always stay that way even though both Verizon and Sprint have it now.
Sprint and especially Verizon are quite different. While they do sell a lot of iPhones they are associated with Android. Verizon is particularly the case due to the Droid line. While the iPhone is a great choice for anyone looking at a smartphone, it isn't the only choice, nor in my opinion the best. Since many high end Android phones seem to be forgotten on AT&T, I have picked out the top 5 that I like the most based on reviews from various sources.
The Galaxy S II skyrocket is by far the best Android phone on AT&T, and in my opinion their best phone period. This remake of the original Galaxy S II is a phenomenal improvement over its sibling already on Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T before its launch.
What makes this beast special? It takes the already powerful Galaxy S II with its Dual Core processor and huge screen and adds AT&T's 4G LTE and ups the processor to 1.5GHz. We aren't talking the semi-4G that AT&T's other Android phones and the iPhone have, we are talking near true 4G speeds. LTE for this monster isnt available yet in most places, but you will fall back on that speedy enhanced 3G network they call 4G until LTE is available for you.
This beast is fairly expensive. At Amazon Wireless it will set you back $179 for new customers and individual plan upgrades, significantly cheaper than from AT&T themselves. For a family plan you will want to go directly to AT&T as they are cheaper at $249.
The HTC Vivid is another one of AT&T's 4G LTE phones. This puppy packs a 1.2 GHz dual core processor with 1GB of RAM and 16 GB of onboard storage. You also get 4.5 inches of screen real estate to work on. You'll get a 8 MP camera that can shoot 1080p HD video.
With 4G LTE this phone is definitely worth the money. Like the Galaxy S II skyrocket it will be able to handle any task you could throw at it. If you are looking for a top of the line phone the Vivid and Skyrocket are perfect.
This is essentially the same phone as the skyrocket above with the exception of LTE. This phone only works on AT&T's HSPA+ network. It is an excellent phone hence why it Is in the number 2 spot, but In My opinion you would be better served going with the skyrocket as it does have a slightly bigger battery and 4G LTE, the future of mobile phones.
The processor on this model is clocked just slower than the skyrocket at 1.2 GHz which is still plenty of fast for nearly anything, and with the included 1 GB of RAM this thing will handle nearly anything you throw at it. Both this model and the skyrocket some with 16GB of storage and a micro sd card slot that supports up to 32 GB of additional storage. From Amazon Wireless this phone is a little cheaper than the skyrocket costing only $99 for new customers and $129-$199 for upgrades depending on the type.
The Samsung Infuse is another great Android phone on AT&T that is a fairly good value. With a 4-star rating on Amazon, this phone is known to be a solid device. You get a 1.2 GHz dual core processor and 16 GB of internal storage + a 2GB micro sd card. You get an 8 MP camera and a 4.5 inch screen. If you are a new customer you can pick it up for $49.99. If you are upgrading an individual account you can get for all of a penny while family plan upgrades will run you $100. If you want to more check out Amazon Wireless to find out more.
The Atrix makes my list for it's value. It is a great phone with good specs from earlier this year. This phone contains the well known Tegra 2 processor with 1GB of RAM and 16 GB of built in storage. You also get a micro sd card slot for more expansion. The battery is quite large and provides great life when compared to many other phones today. This phone is smaller with only a 4 inch screen, but if your looking for a value this is it. New customers and those with individual upgrades can pick up a brand new one from Amazon Wireless for $.01 and is only $89.99 for family plan upgrades, so it is a great choice for maybe a teenager's first Smartphone where you may not want to spend a ton of money.
Other Great Phones to Consider
Both the Titan and the Focus S are great choices and should definitely be considered, but for my list they didn't quite make it, still you should take a look at them.
I hope you find this list helpful. I don't think you can go wrong with any of these phones. Even though the iPhone is great it isn't the only great phone that AT&T offers and I wanted put together something that covered many people's needs and were great devices. If you are interested in knowing more about any of these phones the title for each one will carry you to its Amazon Wireless page where you can get full details on it or purchase it.
